Binoculars are basically two telescopes placed together. The degree of magnification determines how much you can focus. The first number will tell you how many times the item is magnified so that you can see it. The next number determines the brightness. As the lens increases so does the brightness.

...You may also be concerned about the field of view which refers to the image through the lens. If you wear glasses, make sure you have them on when you are testing binoculars. With glasses on, you will have more distance between the lens of the binocular and your eye.

Just like anything else, you get what you pay for. If you are bird watching you will most certainly want to see the details of the bird and not a round fuzzy object. Most generally, the higher priced binoculars will be easier to use and will give you better magnification and focus.

Plan ahead and make sure you have all of your supplies before venturing out in the woods. Make sure you have plenty of water if you plan on hiking and carry some extra supplies. Most importantly, enjoy the experience and make sure you keep track of all the birds you observe.
